Your challenge
Are you the enthusiastic, talented intern we’re looking for?
Supply chain management is more than just how products get from A to B… you must consider all cost drivers in the chain. Packaging design can have potentially huge impacts. The expense related handling and transport is becoming increasingly costly and goods must be packaged not only for the customer but also to minimize supply chain cost, yet ensure quality.
Philips Lighting Operations – Business Group Automotive is looking for a highly energetic and talented, business oriented intern who can help Philips analyze and improve the packaging design for many of its automotive lighting products (shipped by air and sea freight). Since the process is part of the Supply Chain performance, your main challenge will be to investigate where we could better optimize the packaging design to drive costs down (create savings) in transport.
Your responsibilities
· Assess the current packaging design per mode of transport (MOT): air and sea. Identify the cost drivers or constraints and how transport costs are charged (Ex: actual weight versus chargeable weight).
· Identify opportunities to modify packaging design to return new savings, and rank those by savings potential and cost of the change. This will require working with and support from Philips Packaging Competency Centre.
· Review pallet sizes globally and compare ideal sizes and types versus those currently in use.
· Leave no opportunity to save missed; consider the cost of printing on packaging, what is necessary, what could be eliminated.
· Evaluate box sizes: compare sizes available vs what may be more optimum. Evaluate box loading, where or how could we ship more pieces in a box? Or should the stacking pattern or height be changed?
· We expect from you a detailed analysis of the current packaging practices and a list of improvements and recommendations to be applied.
· The goal of this internship is to help a graduate student improve his/her research and business skills in a driving professional environment.
BG Automotive consists of three main Categories: Automotive Lamps, Mobility and Automotive LED, which are responsible for developing, engineering, producing and selling world class lighting products.
You will be part of an international and highly motivated team with colleagues who will create a platform for knowledge management and enable the exchange of best practices. The team is located in Eindhoven in the High Tech Campus, as well as in Aachen and Paris close to stakeholders, suppliers and customers. You will report to the Operations Manager of Philips Lighting BG Automotive.
