Innovation is the life blood of Unilever. It is the only way to get consistent growth, competitive growth, profitable growth and responsible growth. Unilever’s process for managing innovations is called IPM.

Today IPM is the one way brands and countries manage innovation around the world. IPM splits an innovation project up sequential parts each separated by decision points we call gates. These decision points or gates are milestones in a project where several parts such as consumer liking, marketing, customer development, R&D, supply chain and finance are reviewed and judged on viability before the projects progresses to a next phase and eventually brought to market.

IPM also entails portfolio management that allows senior management making the best strategic choices with respect to what activity fit best in Unilever’s mission to double the business whilst halving the environmental impact.

Whilst this process is well established within Unilever and in operation for over 15 years, the business realizes that you have to innovate on the innovation process itself. Especially speed of decision making, communication and collaboration in a company with over 600 brands worked on by 130.000+ employees operating in 150+ countries are always challenging.
