Omschrijving bedrijf/afdeling
Stakeholder Strategy
Royal Schiphol Group has a large number of stakeholders varying from sector partners and government authorities to employees and local residents, each with their own - and often diverging - interests. We are in continuous dialogue with these stakeholders.
Within the Corporate Development department, which is responsible for the strategy and development of Royal Schiphol Group, the team Stakeholder Strategy and Development is responsible for the dialogue of Royal Schiphol Group and all of its stakeholders.
Noise is an important topic for Royal Schiphol Group, and as part of the stakeholder strategy the communication on this subject need to be as transparent as possible. The Stakeholder Strategy and Development team makes annual predictions of the noise impact of the airport. Such predictions are based on complex noise models and a large number of input variables, the team constantly works on improving this modeling.
Weather forecast modelling
The noise impact of an airport is depending on the runway usage. Royal Schiphol Group has a model for predicting the runway usage for an entire year in the near future. The current model has three main components: a traffic forecast, a runway use model and weather forecast model. During the last years improvements in het traffic forecast and the runway use model have been made. Since the weather forecast model is several years old, Schiphol wants to investigate whether there are opportunities to improve this model.
The goal of this internship is to improve the runway usage modelling at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, by improving the weather forecast model based on the latest
insights of science. To achieve this goal, the following questions are of key
importance:
- How was the runway usage in the last five years influenced by the weather?
- What weather parameters are the main drivers of runway usage?
- Is the current set of weather data sufficient for a good prediction of runway
usage?
- How can we improve the current weather modelling?
Implementing an improved weather model is part of this internship.
We are looking for a student with a hands-on mentality who ideally fits the following
profile:
- Master student in the fields of engineering/physics or IT with an affinity for
modeling and simulation.
- Proven programming experience in python/matlab/bash or comparable
languages.
- Speaking Dutch is not a prerequisite, but an advantage.
The preferred starting date of this graduation internship will be December 1 and the
expected duration will be 6 to 9 months.
